Armed Forces Mortgage

Body

We at MK Mortgages are proud to give back to those who serve their country, bringing our expertise to bear in helping them secure a home.

Having spent over 16 years in the military himself, our qualified founder Marc Kavanagh is particularly well-placed to advise and support our service personnel.  Whether you are embarking on a new stage of life outside the military, or attempting to buy a home whilst serving, Marc’s personal experience adds depth and insight to the mortgage process.

The low rate of home ownership in the armed forces is being addressed by the government’s £200-million Forces Help to Buy Scheme (FHTB).  Launched in April 2014, the scheme has been extended to the end of December 2022.

Full eligibility details can be accessed here, and we have answered some of the most commonly asked questions below.

What is the FHTB?

Put simply, the scheme helps service personnel borrow up to 50% of their salary, to a maximum of £25,000, interest-free.

This can be used to buy your first home, move to another property on assignment, or respond to your family’s changing needs.

Why have a mortgage specifically for military personnel?

While a mortgage for military personnel is just like any other mortgage, lenders recognise and are comfortable with the fact that your lifestyle is often very different from someone with a standard nine-to-five job.

What’s so different about mortgages for military personnel?

A standard residential mortgage will allow you to rent out your home as you serve abroad.  You can also purchase a home in the UK for your return, or for your family to live in while you are out of the country.

The Forces Help To Buy Scheme (FHTB) was launched on 1 April 2014 as a 3 year pilot scheme, and has now been extended to the end of December, 2022.

Here at MK Mortgages we can arrange a mortgage to help you buy the property and we specialise in helping service personnel. Full details of the eligibility and qualifying criteria can be found here.
